Barrel Oak Winery is a fine example of a winery keeping a hands-on approach by the owners while using new technology and environmentally friendly ways. The winery is children and dog friendly. Visitors to the winery will likely meet Sharon or Brian and their two friendly golden retrievers.
The owners of Barrel Oak Winery, Brian and Sharon Roeder, are a delightful couple. Their enthusiasm and friendliness is contagious. They delight in telling their story of designing, building and opening Barrel Oak Winery in May 2008. The Roeders created this dream learning, researching and working together. Sharon is also one of the winemakers and prior to opening Barrel Oak Winery spent a year working at other Virginia wineries to learn the art of producing wine. Sharon and Brian were intent upon learning about the best practices for building a winery. They believed it was important to discover from other winemakers what they would change about their own winery facility if they had the opportunity to do so. All of this information was incorporated into the construction of Barrel Oak Winery. Today the Roeders have a state-of-the-art winery located below a large tasting room. Special events including Wine Club members’ events also take place in the winery.
Tasting Room at Barrel Oak Winery
The tasting counter at Barrel Oak Winery offers a graceful curve and is made of zinc. A section of the winery is set up for live music. Displays of giftware and artwork are available for sale. Artwork is displayed on the walls. Overhead a small balcony is available for small events or perhaps for quietly enjoying a glass of wine.
Barrel Oak Vineyards
Vineyards are located on the rolling hills of Virginia. Vineyards consist of Merlot, Chambourcin, Petite Verdot, Seyval Blanc, Vidal Blanc, Petit Manseng, Viognier, Traminette and Chardonnay. Visitors can enjoy a glass of wine on the patio while admiring the scenic mountain views.
Winery Events
Barrel Oak Winery strives to be a winery and event destination site. A wide range of events is frequently available. Many of these events take place on the large patio. Events include TGI Sunsets, holiday activities including 4th of July and Valentine’s Day, painting workshops, fundraising events for people and animals.
Artists are supported by the winery that hosts shows for local artists. Visitors to the tasting room can enjoy browsing the various types of art displayed.
Environmentally Friendly Winery
The Roeders strived to create a winery and vineyard that is environmentally friendly. The winery now includes a number of green technology aspects. Building the winery into a side of a hill provides natural insulation from the ground. Heating and cooling the winery is done with geothermal technology. Low energy lighting provides light. Special timers attached to the high windows open the windows at night to allow air exchange. Recycled old oak fences and barn siding were used to create the tasting room floor.
Barrel Oak Winery is easy to discover just off I-66 in Virginia. Despite its proximity to the Interstate, the winery is located in a country setting with beautiful views. Travelers may want to have a camera when they visit the winery.
